Secret Gathers began far from Ontario, on a quiet night in Aruba, the island whose slogan One Happy Island couldn’t have felt more fitting. A local couple opened their courtyard each night for dinner with a handful of guests. The space was simple. A long family-style table, a few strings of warm bulbs, a tree leaning overhead. You could hear the ocean just beyond the road and smell dinner cooking from the small open-air kitchen beside us.
There was no menu. Each course arrived without introduction, and nobody seemed in a hurry to know what was coming next. People who had met only minutes before were sharing stories, pouring each other drinks, and settling into the kind of conversation that feels natural rather than forced. By the time dessert arrived, the group felt connected in a quiet, memorable way.
Nothing about it was curated, yet everything felt intentional. The ease, the pause, the feeling of being exactly where you were supposed to be lingered long after the plates were cleared. That was the night we realized how rare it is to experience something so simple, yet so meaningful.
That quiet, unhurried feeling followed us into the rest of the trip. We stayed in a small oceanside, Bali-inspired beach shack tucked away behind weathered doors on a private stretch of sand. Inside the walls lived a tiny community of travellers. A sandy path wound past a little honour-system bar, a bookshelf filled with paperbacks left behind by past guests, hammocks swaying under the trees, and a few scattered kayaks waiting by the shoreline.
Mornings drifted by slowly. Some people paddled out across calm water, others read on the porch, and the resident cat wandered from guest to guest as if keeping the rhythm of the place. Evenings turned softer. Conversations unfolded under dim lights. A few chairs gathered near the sand. No schedule, no rush, no need to fill the silence. As we explored the island, we found ourselves wandering into the kinds of places most visitors never think to look. Quiet caves etched with layers of colour. A heart-shaped opening in the rock. Bright murals created by local artists. Neighbourhood paths where time moved differently and everyone greeted you like you were already part of the island.
What stayed with us wasn’t just what we saw. It was the warmth of the people. The way every encounter felt unhurried and genuine, the way everyone seemed to carry the island’s spirit of being one happy community. Small moments stayed with us long after we returned home. A stranger sharing a story with no rush to leave. The echo inside a cave. A morning paddle where the water was so still it felt like time had paused.
Somewhere in those days, we caught ourselves thinking the same thing.

When we returned to Ontario, that question stayed with us. We knew we couldn’t recreate Aruba, but we also knew the feeling we found there wasn’t exclusive to travel.
